I hear this a lot, too, about behavior ("All kids talk to their parents that way"), grades ("Most people are doing worse in that class than I am"), or chores ("Nobody works as hard at home as I do"...HA!). And I remind my kids that what matters are values and principles that we as their parents, and we as a family, embrace -- not what everyone else is or is not doing. I just finished reading a book yesterday called "Happens Every Day" by Isabel Gillies. In the midst of breaking the news to all of her friends and family, she got lots of disconfirmation. Great post, Liz. As the mother of 14 & 11 year-olds (only the older one has a cell phone), I share many of the concerns identified here, and not just for my own kids but for their entire generation. As parents, I think we have to be proactive in helping our children use technology judiciously, as you are in limiting the number of texts your kids can send. I have one other suggestion readers might like to try, which has worked well for us in keeping some portion of my son's life text-free and thus more tuned in to the material world around him. After a 2-week trip to remote regions of Ecuador earlier this year which was blissfully free of cell phones, texting, laptops and iPods, I have recognized the value of instituting such 'tech-free' interludes into our lives on a more regular basis. Whether it's a weekend camping trip in which all devices are left behind, or just a Saturday moratorium on texting and screens, replaced instead by bike rides, board games (imagine! but our kids love them -- note to self: play more often!), and time spent talking, I honestly think my kids are happy to have such times, despite their initial protestations. And it's good for my own online obsessiveness, too, truth be told! We also have a policy of no texting at the dinner table, and I even insist on no texting and no iPods in the car on short local drives -- that's precious conversation time for those in the car. As parents, we are the ones paying for our kids' communication means and privileges, and we have the right -- and a duty -- to help them use them wisely.
